When applied, NuTopp penetrates into the asphalt binder portion of the shingle. As the sun heats the roof, this diffusion deepens over time until equilibrium is reached. That’s when the rejuvenation really happens.
How does it work?
Bio-based oils replace the lighter fractions (maltenes) lost to aging, sun, and oxidation.
A penetrating agent softens the shingle, helping accelerate diffusion.
A rejuvenating agent helps break up hardened asphaltenes, allowing them to recombine with fresh maltene-like components.
A specialized adhesion modifier strengthens the bond between the shingle’s binder and its granules, and also improves resistance to water.
Together, these components restore the shingle’s flexibility and weather resistance by correcting key rheological properties (the flow and softening behavior of the asphalt). Lab indicators of aging—like reduced penetration value, elevated softening point, and increased viscosity—are reversed, bringing the shingle’s performance closer to its original condition.
